Washington-Baltimore News Guild wins another union recognition vote

WASHINGTON—Call it delightful monotony. The Washington-Baltimore News Guild, TNG-CWA Local 32035, just won another union recognition election.

The “overwhelming” vote for the Guild at M&R Strategic Services came on Sept. 21, organizer Bruce Jett reported. The firm is a progressive PR company for non-profit organizations, including UNICEF, Planned Parenthood, the Nature Conservancy and the American Nurses Association, its website shows.

M&R has 130 workers and 82 will be Guild members.

Despite the firm’s progressive reputation and clients, its management insisted on a National Labor Relations Board election, even after the Guild produced enough election request cards to seek automatic card-check recognition. Management also tried to exclude 19 people as alleged supervisors but the NLRB regional office rejected that demand.

That battle caused a one-month delay in the vote, Jett added.
