School Leaders Unite at Capitol Hill to Support Principal Funding

AFSA, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) co-sponsored an event on Capitol Hill to support and discuss the importance of fully funding Title II, Part A under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) on Oct. 24. The briefing, “Do State ESSA Plans Address Leadership? Reflections on Innovative Support for School Principals and Other Leaders” was part of a series of events in honor of National Principals Month this October.

The four panelists discussed the effects of ESSA and how professional development can improve all aspects of school life. These panelists included Executive Director of Association of Washington School Principals Gary Kipp, Principal of Arthur Middleton Elementary School Louis D’Ambrosio, Principal of Bluffton High School Steve Baker, and Principal of Calverton Elementary Monique Lamar and member of Association of Supervisory and Administrative School Personnel (ASASP), AFSA, Local 109. The moderator was Principal of Oxon Hill High School Jean-Paul Cadet and member of ASASP, AFSA Local 109. Doris Reed, ASASP’s Executive Director also attended and presented opening remarks.

Throughout the discussion, the panelists highlighted the need for more professional development in their schools. “Sadly, only a single digit percentage of principals’ time goes to professional development,” said one of the panelists. They also spoke out saying that more professional development would allow teachers and principals to learn while on the job. Principal Monique Lamar stressed the importance of professional development for training educators on technology integration and the impacts of poverty.

During the Q&A portion, one audience member brought up the topic of technology in schools. One panelist said, “We have changed the practice of teaching with technology.” One of the panelists discussed how with technology being so prevalent in everyday life, it is up to educators to teach students how to use technology responsibly and for their benefit.
