October is National Principals Month!

This October we celebrate all school leaders! This is your opportunity to thank your principal for his/her support for your school, students, and community. Principals work hard to improve schools and ensure the success of all students, but they are seldom properly recognized for their efforts. That’s why AFSA, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the National Association of Elementary School Principals are designating October 2017 as National Principals Month. Visit www.principalsmonth.org to learn about events and more!

Promote Principal Leadership

The success of every school and student depends on the effectiveness of school leaders. National Principals Month is one way we can promote the importance of and investments in school leadership. Here are a few ways for you to celebrate your leadership.

Shadowing Visits

Shadowing visits provide a wonderful opportunity for members of Congress and congressional staffers to experience firsthand the role and responsibilities of exemplary principals. It also provides an occasion to highlight the excellence in leadership that principals provide to schools, educators, and students everywhere. Use our template email to invite your legislators to shadow you for a day.

E-cards

Send a fellow principal a free e-card in honor of this month’s celebration. All you have to do it add your message and schedule the date and time for the card to be emailed—we’ll take care of the rest.

Social Media Toolkit

Use our sample social media posts to spread the word about National Principals Month to your students, staff, and community. Make sure to use #ThankAPrincipal in your posts!

Attend a Webinar

Free professional development webinars will be available for principals throughout the month. Check the calendar of events here to learn more. AFSA will be hosting a webinar on Oct. 26. Register here

Video Contest

One fun and exciting way for students and advisers to get involved in the celebration is to enter the video contest. We are asking students (with teacher supervision) to create a short, unique video that tells us what their principal means to them and to your school. Get creative! For example, past students have done lip syncs, music videos, and dances to show their appreciation. (You can view last year’s video entries on the Principals Month YouTube playlist.)

One winner will be chosen for each school level: elementary, middle, and high school. Each winning school will receive a $200 gift card to Best Buy.

We hope you will jump on this opportunity to celebrate your principal and have some fun. The competition gets tougher every year, so start brainstorming today! The deadline to submit your video is 11:59 p.m. September 29, 2017.

On behalf of the nation’s principals, thank you for your assistance in celebrating principal leadership.
