Labor news around the nation

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. —Some 38 production and janitorial workers at Wendt Corp., a Cheektowaga, N.Y., manufacturer of scrap metal recycling processes and products, are scheduled to vote on June 9 on whether to unionize with Ironworkers Local 576, National Labor Relations Board Buffalo Regional Director Paul Murphy ruled in May.

The company tried to expand the unit – a common corporate tactic to defeat union drives – to include 10 more workers, including tech center operators and temp-to-perm workers, at another facility several miles away, but Murphy rejected their request.

The company’s proposed additional groups of workers do not “have a community of interest” with the production workers at Cheektowaga, Murphy said.
