Dorning succeeds Almeida at fed’s Dept. for Professional Employees

WASHINGTON—Oregon native Jennifer Dorning, a Professional and Technical Engineers member and research director for the AFL-CIO Department for Professional Employees, succeeded department President Paul Almeida in the top job on September 1.

Dorning, who will serve the last three years of Almeida’s term, is DPE’s first female head. Almeida is retiring. Dorning is an associate member of the Society for Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, IFPTE’s biggest local and the one that represents Boeing engineers. She’s also a former member of The News Guild.

Dorning joined the department in August 2010. A department statement says she now “assists the DPE president with the development and management of DPE activities and projects related to organizing, affiliate collaboration, and outreach to the public.”

A graduate of Portland (Ore,) State University and the Gonzaga University Law School, Dorning worked in private practice and as a top aide to Oregon State Sen. Ginny Burdick (D) before joining the AFL-CIO’s department.
