Congress Plans Major Cuts to SNAP While Protecting Tax Loopholes for Corporations

Hungry KidsWhile jobs remain scarce and middle-class families are still struggling to recover from the Great Recession, some of Washington’s politicians are making cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) a top priority while they continue to protect outrageous tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are proposing to cut $40 billion from SNAP, formerly known as food stamps. This drastic cut will take away food from up to 6 million people, including kids, seniors and veterans. Almost half of SNAP recipients are children and another 22 percent are adults living with children.

This huge cut to food assistance is cruel and unnecessary. Instead of reducing food assistance to American families, Congress should be closing tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy that cost us tens of billions of dollars every year.  It’s time for Congress to represent us and our values. Ending hunger should be the priority, not protecting corporations.
